Cloud version of Cross Media continues #winterlude3 #online11

It is still making sense to think about cloud versions of events. Cross Media Live being round about now for example rather than next September. Sorry this is going to be jumpy and without all links but it will be updated later. Plan A is to visit Olympia tomorrow so need to pack.

The British Library has the headlines on BBC news with a scan of newspapers. But I don't think they have much of a stand at Olympia. In future there could be just dates when certrain #tags are assumed.

Through Twitter I discover that

 Dan Dube, EVP, Cloud Solutions at Really Strategies, Inc. will speak at Online Information 2011, the largest event dedicated to the Information Industry.  On Thursday, December 1st at 1:10pm in Theatre 4, near the XML Pavilion, Mr. Dube will present, “Success Stories: automated production of print and ebooks, featuring RSuite Cloud.”  

This appears to be a continuous workflow for hard copy or ebook. Even if this one is not convincing there could be similar ideas about.

David Penfold from the London College of Communication will talk about document structure etc. At one point he was hosting a panel but now there seems to be a return to theory. Maybe some sort of crunch is expected.

The LCC used to talk about print and publishing. Now it is media and design. How these fit together is still a mystery for me. The Futures Conference used to be at Digital Solutions, Digital Print World or Total Print. Now it is just at LCC but could be at Cross MEdia Islington presumably. I missed it this year but have found an archive of the live video stream. So far I have got as far as Ian Lacey who is surprisingly relaxed about digital, now working with inkjet and cards. Cross Media could mean that print is seen as part of something else. A cloud version of Cross Media means that reporting on it is not very precise about dates and is revised a few times before the next one.

By the way Andrew Tribute is quite right about Kodak. Their technology is excellent and newspapers need variable information. And thanks for the Zi8.

Cross Media has to include Television #winterlude3

Today is the first day of a sort of cloud version of Cross Media Live. It should have been the first day of an actual event in Islington but this is now for Sept next year.

So time travel is in order. The winterlude usually stops with Learning Technologies but I think some aspects of drupa are now clear. (This blog may seem a bit random and unconnected but the content will be rearranged over next weekend after Online Information, real time at Olympia )

Is it very likely there could be an "inkjet drupa" again? I have now said seveal times that this will be the VIDEOdrupa. The main news from IPEX was that the equipment manufacturers went direct to video with significant studio space for Kodak, Oce and others.

Then recently a Printweek blog commented about Andrew Tribute on YouTube with a comment through Kodak B2B

The thing is, if this was on aq media channel that restricted prime content to subscribers,  then Kodak would not reach most of the audience they need. So expect much more video on YouTube etc. with high value content.

Print is another part of the web context.

I came across a blog by Matt Straz who wants an Apple TV for Xmas. He thinks this is possible because of remarks in Steve Jobs biography and leaks that Sharp will deliver screens in February. 

Seems quite likely that 2012 will be a year for TV as another app device. The Consumer Electronics Show will be part of the winterlude even if Apple are not there. They won't be at drupa either.

Online Information in the cloud and at Olympia

My impression so far is that The Online Information show has been a big success in making a case for the cloud. However the need for a show may diminish.

This is the second year that the Apps show will be next door.

Both Highwire Press and the British Library do not have stands this time, but they do have new apps.

Wired show several graphics for an app linked to the new exhibition Royal Manuscripts: The Genius of Illumination,

and Highwire have an app that  views " articles “off-campus” via the mobile voucher service. Users can register their devices and be able to access their institutional account away from the main institutional network"

Meanwhile there are fairly new organisations that seem to exist and promote mostly online. Looking through blogs shows that Scribd are recruiting mobile engineers and Mendeley reach librarians online.

Cross Media Live , What Time Is It? #winterlude3

Next week might have been the time for Cross Media Live, an event in Islington from IPEX to follow discussion at digi:media linked to drupa. Then it was decided to postpone this till 2012.

I have started a "What Time Is It?" topic on LinkedIn. The issues seem to be moving faster than the pace of shows.

Meanwhile Adobe have decided not to attend BETT. They were not much at IPEX. They concentrate on digital promotion and have new apps for tablets.

So the LinkedIn group could be a place to check out how current these issues are. My guess is that next week would have been a good for a bit of a chat.

The Winterlude continues through Online Information / BETT / Learning Technologies

The Cloud has arrived in the UK, Adobe follows the logic at BETT #winterlude3

Following previous blog post it has been confirmed that Adobe will not be at BETT 2012.

So I am beginning to realise that this Winterlude will be a bit different. There are still real events at Olympia but also links online and memories of previous occasions. I still think the theory of blended learning applies. Once in a while a face to face event contributes something.

No Highwire Press at Online Information. No Turning Pages from the British Library. Not sure how the show floor will look.

The conference continues but as the case for information being online gets stronger there is also more of a sort of conference through Twitter etc. for most of the year.

There will be an Adobe stand at :Learning Technologies but this was originally Macromedia and will probably feature Flash. The BETT stand was a rare occasion when the full range of Adobe products was available.

Adobe is now going to concentrate on Touch applications for tablets. Most seem to be for Android with Apple to follow soon. By the way Apple left BETT a couple of years ago so the Cloud has been building. Retail shops across the UK help as well of course. Some sort of face to face contact has a benefit for most brands. Will apps for tablets work as part of consumer electronics? Bundled with your phone contract?

Meanwhile Michael Gove still considers the idea that a mobile phone should be confiscated and David Cameron worries about those at the back of the class checking Facebook. Maybe apps and tablets will be outside the formal educational system in the UK and the cloud will reach us some other way.

The Adobe Education Exchange has been expanded for the UK and has a lot of resources for universities as well as schools. I found that my usual Adobe ID worked ok. I soon found a guide to a "cheatsheet" a PDF to print out yourself with a guide to avaiilable commands. Once upon a time software came in boxes with pieces of paper that explained what to do. Now there are online communities where help will turn up eventually.

So the cloud approach will probably work out ok and may suit the new range of products.

But I still like the occasional real event. Maybe Learning Technologies and BETT could get together. They already fit as spaces, just a few days to work out the difference between. But Adobe could well move on before this happens. They still have real events in California and New York. But here in the UK the cloud has arrived and we will just have to talk to each other. 

Michael Gove will speak at BETT - source BETT Radio #winterlude3

BETT Radio from Exeter today but there is also an mp3 from previously. I don't know if this is already well known but it was news to me in today's broadcast that Michael Gove will be at Olympia on the opening day. There is a change of tone from the previous one where it seemed possible he would not want to attend.

Last year was the first BETT since BECTA was closed down. It seemed to be policy not to intervene in whether or not schools adopted technology. Maybe there is some change in this.

However there has been some reporting of doubts about technolgy. 

The Huffington Post has reported that Gove suggested confiscating mobile phones during a talk at the Conservative conference. 
The Telegraph featured an article by David Cameron including the question “Why should we put up with a school content to let a child sit at the back of the class, swapping Facebook updates? " , which is a fair question but so far seems not to have been balanced by asking how social media relate to learning.

The winterlude is a period of reflection about technology and communication. The Cloud seems certain to be one of the topics, with Olympia as a UK point of contact. Also featuring stands from Singapore and Qatar.

Today I listened to BETT radio, direct from Exeter where I live.

So the BETT event seems to have started, well ahead of January. Yesterday I watched a video of Chuck Geschke on early Adobe history. I may soon understand how Adobe see the cloud and UK events face to face. They do have a point about what is happening.

So the Winterlude is only partly about actual time at Olympia London UK. Future Winterludes may not have any face to face, just a memory of Olympia before it was flats and Chelsea built a new stadium at Earls Court.

The main outline seems to be Information before the holiday, then technology at BETT, and then learning at Learning Technologies. Online Information is mostly about content, structured and with authority. Science at universities for example. BETT links to technology as used by young people. It cannot be too far away from what happens out of school. Learning Technologies has some space for informal learning, adult education, whatever you want to call it. So this could be the time for a general discussion on what new technology is interesting and how to evolve the valued information. This sort of process could happen at any time as all three shows are online already and there is an input from memories of previous occasions.

Previously I thought the Winterlude was mostly about technology but now it seems to be a lot about ideas. Technology as consumer electronics needs less explanation. It can be assumed that most of it works ok. I have been thinking about the Management Theory at Work conferences a while ago and there is a LinkedIn group to look at another one

This blog will include some ideas relevant to this. The original conferences had a strong critique aspect that I think blocked the possibility of linking technology and learning organisations. Technology has happened anyway. There is still interest in innovation but there could also be more study on disruption. The Deming Special Interest Group of the CQI will have a meeting on Deming Secrets on Dec 8th. If quality theory is "the new economics" it can include explanation of how firms fail. So this is in the background.

Previously, "only the paranoid survive" , what is this about? Probably there will be some examples of survival methods.

Will Adobe be at BETT 2012 this January? Apple left Olympia some time ago.

Can't find Adobe on the floor plan for BETT. Maybe if the new emphasis is on tablets then a face to face occasion is not required. They have real meetings in Calfornia and New York though.

If there is no need to educate future users of Creative Suite then maybe the prices will drop soon. Online functionality that anyone can use sounds as if it ought to be cheap. And the older technology that no longer needs to be promoted should be even cheaper.

Apple stopped attending UK shows a few years ago. There has been comment about how Final Cut Pro is now more of a consumer level product with some features missing from the previous desktop style. If everything is supposed to be an App for a few pounds then the expense of Olympia could be hard to justify.

Maybe I just missed the info. If you know where Adobe is at BETT 2012 please add a comment. 

Adobe moves into the cloud, online publishing and Flash video no longer "disruptive"

At the recent meeting for financial analysts.Adobe Chief Technology Officer Kevin Lynch outlined the cloud approach for media and marketing.

But first, CEO Shantanu Narayan asserted that all print publishers are facing a transition to online and that there is already momentum for video and television to be watched through the internet. The introduction of PDF as a format has already had an effect. HTML 5 will be developed for mobile devices but there is still potential for Flash on televisions or whatever the devices are to be called that have fairly large screens and stay home.

So watching the presentation, (still stored on the Adobe website for a week or so) I get the impression that Adobe is now a marketing company rather than a technology company. At least there is not a technology driver as with Postscript and PDF for early Adobe or Flash for Macromedia.

Kevin Lynch talks about PDF and AIR as disruptive innovation, incremental innovation as in regular improvement and then what appears as  innovation through acquisition. This includes newly purchased service companies that fit the vision of cloud marketing. For Adobe Macromedia was innovation through acquisition. Maybe this can go on indefinitely. There is a marketing operation that could cope with any product.

However I think the classic products such as Acrobat could drop in price a bit or at least other software be considered over time. There was nothing about any development for PDF or Acrobat as desktop software. If it is to be left behind as a "cash cow" in marketing jargon then people will wonder about price levels. Flash still has a way to go given the numbers of screens on the planet but again there may be more and cheaper ways to create Flash files. Loading and editing a video clip could get easier.

"Print and Publishing" still shown as an income stream but not much talked about. I think Shantanu Narayan is right that print publishing is moving online. In the UK the Guardian Media pages and Printweek both carry on reporting print and books as if nothing sudden will happen. But there is talk of "digital first" for newspapers and Haymarket expand online. I think this Adobe meeting could be a point in time when a stage in technology development became clear. This will be looked at again during events in the UK such as Online Information and BETT.
